I have been asked to investigate two saddles long stored in a carriage house. Were they CW artillery saddles? The curator would be thankful for any help.

Hi Philip

Looks to be a CW Grimsley Valise saddle in the first photos and a CW Artillery Driver's saddle in the next photos.
Hope that helps
Kurt.

Sorry just to correct myself, looking closer I think they are both valise saddles, I guess they both the same size?

They appear to be the same size. I could find no markings on the corroded brass plates or elsewhere. There are a true "barn find."

Hi Philip

Yes as you say a true barn find. Looks like they just need dusting off.

Kurt.

They are very brittle. Part of one was found in standing water. The leather is hard and brittle. The curator was wondering what they were and what to do with them.
