It wasn't a very pleasant Christmas for the PA National Guard troops stationed on the Texas border in 1916:
"It certainly was a sad Christmas. All our dinner spoiled by the sand and the dust was so thick in mess hall that it was impossible to see the tropical Christmas tree, which I had built up out of the cactus...." (Letter from Theodore Boal to Hon. Herbert Parsons, Dec. 26, 1916)
