Somebody who knows this area pointed out to me that this isn't far from Arlington, which Google confirms.
It's always dangerous to romanticize the past, but there's something charming in a way about an era, just 100 years past, when just outside of Washington D.C. the 4th of July was celebrated with some sort of rural horse race.
